Engineering Design of Bypass Line

PROJECT SUMMARY
A failed check valve was restricting flow, reducing plant output, so a bypass was required to regain the required flow rate. The plant had to remain online, so 2 hot taps were required before installation of the bypass line. The project was managed by the client with Five-D carrying out all the Mechanical Engineering, with specialist Hot Tap Fitter from the US and local Structural Engineer.

SCOPE
Our scope at Five-D was to carry out the engineering design of the bypass line to ASME B31.3. This involved:

  • 3D modelling the area, based on 3D point cloud scan

  • Pipe stress analysis of existing, and final solution

  • Obtaining DV

  • Liasing with Structural Engineer to set up temporary supports

CHALLENGES

  • High temperatures resulting in large thermal movements of piping system

  • Very short installation window with Specialists coming from the US

  • Restricted space to locate HotTap drill equipment and bypass line.

OUTCOME
The project was a resounding success, with works completed on time and process flow restored to previous levels.
